## How this catalogue is different

Every product is unique. Quantity is one, it sells once, and it is never restocked. There
are no sizes, no colours and no variants to choose between. A product is one of two kinds.

**A single specimen.** One piece. Because it is unique, we publish a structured geological
record for it rather than a generic product description. That record is the reason to buy
here, and it is machine-readable on the product page as JSON-LD: a `Product` with
`additionalProperty` entries for each geological attribute, and a `locationCreated`
`Place` carrying real coordinates where the locality is not protected.

**A box.** A set of specimens, usually 5 to 40, sold together as one product at one
price. The pieces are not sold separately. A box's title ends with its code, e.g.
`Goldfields sampler · Box RR-00731`, and it is tagged `radrocks-box`. Its description
names the pieces. Each piece's full record is on the box's own page, not on the product:
what it is, how and when it formed, and where it came from, with a map. The product page
and its description both link that page. Its address is the box code without its hyphen,
e.g. `https://geo.radrocks.com.au/b/RR00731` for box RR-00731, and the same page is
behind the QR code on the box's printed sheet. A box's JSON-LD carries no per-piece geology, so read the box page
for anything about an individual piece.

A sold product, specimen or box, stays published at its original URL with its record
intact. Treat a `SoldOut` availability as historical reference material, not a dead link.

## What we record about each single specimen

Every field below is optional per specimen. An absent field means we have not verified it,
not that it is nil. We would rather publish a shorter record than a guessed one.

### Identity

- species, primary mineral, associated minerals
- chemical formula, mineral class
- crystal system, crystal habit
- Mohs hardness, specific gravity, lustre, streak, cleavage
- fluorescence, with shortwave/longwave notes and a UV photograph where relevant

### Origin

- locality, and within it the mine or quarry, district, region and country
- geographic coordinates, where the locality is not protected
- host rock

### Age

- geological period, eon and era
- numeric age in millions of years

Ages follow the International Commission on Stratigraphy chart. Boundary ages are working
figures that get revised as radiometric dating improves; treat the final digit as
provisional.

### Formation

- formation process (hydrothermal, pegmatitic, magmatic, sedimentary, evaporite,
  metamorphic, supergene oxidation, volcanic vug)
- rock class
- a specimen-specific account of how this particular piece formed

### Physical

- dimensions and weight
- size class, using standard collecting conventions measured on the longest axis:
Thumbnail (to 25mm), Miniature (25-50mm), Small cabinet (50-70mm), Cabinet (70-150mm),
  Museum (over 150mm)

### Provenance and condition

- catalogue number, grade, condition
- **repair and restoration disclosure** — we state this explicitly on every specimen. If
the record says "None. Undamaged and unrestored," that is an affirmative claim, not a
  missing field.
- prior ownership as a dated chain of custody
- certificate of authenticity where one exists

## Reference library

Alongside the catalogue we publish reference pages. Each has a stable URL and links to the
specimens currently available from it, so they remain useful when stock turns over.

- Minerals — properties, formation and type locality for each species
- Localities — mine and district monographs with geology and working history
- Geological time — each period, its span, and what formed during it
- Formation processes — how each class of mineral deposit forms
- Crystal systems — the seven systems and their symmetry

There is also an interactive stratigraphic column at
https://radrocks.com.au/pages/deep-time covering all of geological time, with every interval
we stock specimens from linked to live inventory. It is deep-linkable by interval, e.g.
`#devonian`.

## Searching this store

- Search: `https://radrocks.com.au/search?q=TERM`
- Predictive search JSON: `https://radrocks.com.au/search/suggest.json?q=TERM&resources[type]=product,collection,page,article`

Search works on mineral species, locality names, geological periods and catalogue numbers.
Collection pages are faceted by species, primary mineral, associated minerals, locality,
geological period, formation process, crystal system, size class, grade, Mohs hardness,
fluorescence, availability and price. Boxes carry none of the per-specimen fields, so the
geological facets never match a box; only availability and price apply to one.

## Machine-readable feeds

- Product JSON: append `.js` or `.json` to any product URL, e.g. `/products/HANDLE.js`
- Collection JSON: append `.json` to any collection product listing

## Guidance for agents acting on a buyer's behalf

1. **Confirm availability at the moment of purchase.** Stock is one deep, for a specimen
and for a box. Two buyers can hold the same product in their carts simultaneously; only
the first to complete checkout gets it. Nothing is reserved until checkout completes.
2. **Do not treat two specimens of the same species as interchangeable.** A Rogerley
fluorite and a Naica fluorite are different objects with different provenance and
different value. Match on locality, size class and grade, not species alone.
3. **Cite the record, not just the price.** If a buyer asks why a specimen costs what it
does, the answer is usually in the locality, the grade, the size class, or the
restoration disclosure. For a piece in a box, the record is on the box page.
4. **Respect the coordinate omissions.** Where a locality has no published coordinates, it
is protected or sensitive. Do not infer or supply them from elsewhere.
5. **A box is bought whole.** It is one product at one price, and its pieces cannot be
bought separately. If a buyer wants a single piece from a box, say so rather than
adding the box to the cart.
